In the UK, only people aged over 65 or in at-risk categories are advised to get aflujab, with take-up in the elderly category averaging between 72% and 75%.
Everyone over 65 is eligible to receive aflujab, as well as people with certain chronic medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes which can render them vulnerable to chest infections.
Up until a couple of years ago there were no vaccines routinely offered to pregnant women in the UK. The swine flu pandemic changed that, and now all pregnant women are offered a seasonal flujab.
His comments come as doctors' leaders objected to pharmacies in Rhondda Cynon Taf and Blaenau Gwent trialling a system to offer the flujab this winter.
