It's a far cry from the golden ageofexploration, when daring men set sail into the unknown, fearful they might suddenly drop off the edge of the world.
They are, depending on your perspective, either pursuing the ultimate vanity project or are on the forefront of a new ageofexploration that harkens back to the great adventurers of centuries past when men (and they were nearly all men) ventured into the vast blank spots on the world map.
Polar historian and author Dr Huw Lewis-Jones thinks this reenactment is an excellent way of resussitating interested in the early 20th century period known as the "Heroic Ageof Antarctic Exploration".
Still, beneath the pop-provocateur veneer, Sachs has always maintained a childlike awe of the golden ageof industrial might and technology, most recently in his fascination with space exploration.
