Following his time as a test pilot the AirCommodore commanded No 29 Squadron during the Battle of Britain where he flew Blemheim's and later, Beaufighters.
The attacks were carried out "without significant collateral damage to civilian life or infrastructure, " said AirCommodore David Wilby, a British member of NATO's staff.
As people arrived at the church the Guernsey Scout Band played and the service ended with a flypast by a 29 Squadron Typhoon, marking the Air Commodore's connection to the squadron.
There were also unconfirmed reports that refugees were being shelled by mortar and artillery fire in the Pagarusa Valley, along Kosovo's western border with Albania, British AirCommodore David Wilby said.
AirCommodore Andrew Lambert told the Guardian newspaper the RAF had already lost bases of historic importance because of defence cuts, and questioned whether it was necessary to add Northolt to the list.
