Organisations such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the AmericanCivilLibertiesUnion, the Sunlight Foundation and Avaaz.org have all voiced their concerns about the extent to which the government would be able to monitor private information.
The plan drew immediate criticism from the AmericanCivilLibertiesUnion and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which said it would effectively gut court oversight of domestic intelligence-gathering.
But a coalition of groups that fought the ban in California courts -- including the AmericanCivilLibertiesUnion, the Human Rights Campaign and the Lambda Legal Foundation -- urged supporters Wednesday to turn their energy toward winning in the political arena rather than the courts.
