The research will focus on the current two main threats to the cereal crop: wheat bulb flies that attack the roots, and cereal aphids that tackle the tops of plants.
This is where genetically modified wheat is being grown, part of an experiment to see if the plants can repel a common pest, aphids, without having to resort to insecticide.
The larvae are the main heavy feeders and they eat mainly aphids, but the fear is that when the aphids run out they feed on all sorts of other things - including the native ladybirds.
