Fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa powered his Honda to the front row, just five hundredths behind with Australia's CaseyStoner on a Ducati half a second back in qualifying third fastest.
Former world champion CaseyStoner will also be eager to get back into action this weekend, after illness problems meant he had to settle for fourth place in last year's title race.
Rossi's passes on CaseyStoner at Laguna Seca in 2008 and on Lorenzo at Barcelona in 2009 are probably the best for sheer outlandishness, and the effect they had on the championship both seasons.
The Spaniard lost his crown to CaseyStoner last year but tops this season's standings by 23 points from Honda's Dani Pedrosa with five wins and four second-placings from 10 of the 18 races so far.
