Nanosolar is one of several Silicon Valley startups that have attracted billions of dollars in venture capital to develop a thin-film technology called copper indium gallium selenide, or CIGS. Such solarcells use little expensive silicon, the main ingredient of conventional photovoltaic cells.
The company is installing equipment at the new factory in Portland and bringing the machines online to roll out its solar panels, which contain a thin layer of solarcells made with copper, indium, gallium and selenium (CIGS).
