Organisms that make shells or have skeletons that are exposed to seawater, such as clams, snails and sea butterflies, could see their shells dissolveinwater that is too acidic.
This is a molecule or molecular combination that has different properties on different parts of its surface: in particular, one part prefers to dissolveinwater whereas another part prefers oil.
One way round this for a swimming animal is to develop an outlet which allows urea to dissolve directly in the water as it swims, which is what the turtles seem to have done.
