For starters, you have to know that this is the first feature directed by Drew Goddard, a writer from the "Buffy, " "Angel, " "Lost" school, based on a screenplay he co-wrote with the considerably famous "Buffy", "Firefly", "Angel" creator Joss Whedon.

Drew Goddard, who wrote Cloverfield and penned "Cabin in the Woods" with Joss Whedon, had drafted a script for the story, in which a high-functioning artificial intelligence turns against mankind and wages all-out war to wipe us off the planet.

No Oscar nominations are likely for this one, unless it picks up some for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, but it would be truly wonderful to see an unexpected nod for Best Original Screenplay for co-authors Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard (which would be entirely reasonable).
