Everybodysings well, and Valerie Maze's five-piece pit band sails through Mr. Sondheim's score as though it were easy, which it isn't not by the longest of shots.
Mr. Sondheim's iridescent harmonies have never come across so lucidly, and the fact that everybody in the cast sings exceptionally well (something that can never be taken for granted in Sondheim revivals) is continually gratifying.
"Everybody used to call you Lucky when you were young, " Fallon sings in the magnificent "Stay Lucky, " taking all of 10 words to sum up a lifetime of compromise and faded hope.
