When gluten hits the gut in someone with celiac disease, it sets off an immunereaction which kills off the cells forming the inner lining of the small intestine.
The new study suggested that the antibody produced by the malfunctioning immune system might trigger a reaction which led to the destruction of these cells.
Another theory is that the initial illness may have created an autoimmune reaction, causing the body's immune system to attack normal cells as if they were foreign substances.
I've now been told I have no allergy but chronic ordinary urticaria which basically means my immune system is rubbish and anything could trigger a reaction of various degrees at anytime.
There was no adverse reaction to the drugs, and if my immune system weakens in later years there are encouraging signs that the therapy will help to counter that - and hopefully this will continue to keep me healthy.
