During the bilateral meeting between Irina Bokova and Ms. Hasmik Poghosyan, Minister of culture of Armenia, the Minister emphasized the growing importance of intangible cultural heritage and the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions in her country.
Throughout the day, experts of cultural heritage worked to fine-tune an action plan for the protection of tangible and intangible cultural heritage and manuscripts in the region.
In this regard, the establishment by UNESCO of the International Coordinating Committee for the Safeguarding of Haitian Cultural Heritage reflects its commitment to the protection of the tangible and intangible heritage of Haiti and its cultural industries that are inseparable from its development and essential to its economy.
The Convention obliges States to take necessary measures to ensure the protection of intangible cultural heritage and promote cooperation at regional and international levels.
UNESCO: Culture Sector - Intangible Heritage - 2003 Convention
The adoption of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003) and that of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (2005) were major steps forward in winning recognition of such diversity.
This mandate of UNESCO has been further emphasized through a variety of resolutions and initiatives, such as the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the adoption of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
The president of CNPC also mentioned that Cuba, by virtue of a resolution of the Minister of Culture, created in 2004 the Commission for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which proofs the importance the country grants to the protection of these manifestations of identity.
Along with the 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage and the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage this Convention is one of the pillars of the preservation and promotion of cultural diversity.
In his intervention, Fernando Brugman addressed the synergies of the Argentinean project with UNESCO programmes, and its possible relationship with the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions and the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
