UNESCO, which has a specific mandate in the sciences, has long promoted science for sustainable development through programs and platforms such as the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, the International Hydrological Programme, the International Geoscience Programme and the Man and the Biosphere Programme.
Equally at risk is La Gomera which was named a Biosphere Reserve under the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme in July this year.
These are sites established by countries and recognized under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme (UNESCO-MAB) to promote sustainable development based on local community efforts and sound science.
Similarly, sites under the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme have been affected, including La Palma Biosphere Reserve.
The session also coincides with the World Science Day for Peace and Development (10 November 2011) and celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (3 November 2011).
The International Co-ordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB-ICC) is meeting on 9-13 July 2012 to consider new sites for inclusion in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
