Today, Native Americans are leaders in every aspect of our society -- from the classroom, to the boardroom, to the battlefield.

Today, even though Native Americans are still the poorest of the poor, a recent study shows that we have increased our population rate and our per-capita income more than any other ethnic group in the country during the past decade.

Those expressions of unity still echo today, whether in the contributions that generations of Native Americans have made to our country, the Union our forebears fought so hard to preserve, or the providence that draws our families together this season.

And that's why representatives of multiple agencies are here today -- because if we're going to address the needs of Native Americans in a comprehensive way, then we've got to mount a comprehensive response.
