In 1999 Buck deciphered a sort of alphabet, or code, in which each receptor detects more than one odorant, and each odorant can be detected by more than one receptor.
Even more surprisingly, they found that each receptor, located on the surface of a particular cell, is unique, and when activated by an odorant, triggers the cell to send an electrical signal to the brain.
