While at UCLA, I was fortunate to work with a group of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) students who took it upon themselves to create a tutoring and mentoring program for NHPI high school youth in Los Angeles called PIER (Pacific Islander Education and Retention).
On July 24 to 27, WHIAAPI Advisor Miya Saika Chen will participate in the Asian Pacific Islander Institute on Domestic Violence Summit in San Francisco, CA. The summit will engage advocates and organizations serving Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders to address violence against women.
Also on May 5, WHIAAPI will convene an AAPI Student Success Program at South Seattle Community College, followed by a TEACH Campaign Student Roundtable at the University of Washington Ethnic Cultural Center, a collaborative event between WHIAAPI, the Associated Students of Washington Pacific Islander Student Commission, and the U.S. Department of Education TEACH Campaign to encourage AAPI students to become teachers.

In addition, we continue to work closely with Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander professional and advocacy groups to support health initiatives and research through agencies including NIH, CDC, SAMHSA, and HRSA. Our Office of Minority Health (OMH) has a long history of working with AANHPI organizations and works closely with Guam and other Pacific jurisdictions on prevention and testing for HIV, sexually transmitted infections and other co-morbidities.
