Saudi Arabia is the fifth of a six-nation tour of Middle East nations that Bush began last week aimed at garnering support for Palestinian-Israeli peacetalks and shoring up regional security against terrorism.
Under Mubarak, Egypt was a major player in Israeli-Palestinian peacetalks, and it contributed troops to the U.S.-led coalition that drove Iraq out of Kuwait in 1991.
As two decades of peacetalks have failed to secure a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Palestinian officials insist the time is right to ask the UN to grant full membership to an independent state of Palestine.
