Americans were some of the first to rush out and buy new plasmas and LCDs.
Samsung has just released information about its 2007 lineup of HDTVs, including new LCDs, DLPs, plasmas and even CRTs.

Plasmas are gases in which the molecules have been stripped of some or all of their electrons, to create positive ions.
Times sure have changed and now the future of plasmas is questionable.
And just so RPTVs and LCDs didn't steal all the glamour, plasmas saw a 63-percent jump in revenue and a 140-percent increase in unit volume.
But cold plasmas can be made using high electrical voltages.
Their results were published in the Physics of Plasmas.

Bottom line: no technology reigns supreme forever, but we don't see plasma giving up the picture quality crown just yet and we don't think Europe will be refusing to sell plasmas en masse, either.
This was back when plasmas had a bad rap due to rumors were flying around about refilling the gases and HAZMAT accidents, but still, everyone wanted one - except their five digit price tag.
Anyone who's strolled through a big box retailer's HDTV department has probably seen a variety of Panasonic plasmas, but you may not have paid too much attention to the company's own LCD TV lineup while you were there.

Other contenders included Panasonic's new top-of-the-line ZT plasmas, Samsung's 85-inch UHDTV and LG's soon-to-ship 55-inch OLED, but when we're thinking about what the best thing we saw this year was, there's no question that this is it.
After working for months on smaller (only 85- or 103-inch) 4K plasmas, the two companies had to come up with an entirely new drive method for the display that works by scanning the pixels vertically to achieve a uniform picture quality.

We always figured that LCDs and plasmas used less power than CRTs, but apparently digital HDTVs actually suck up more power than analog TVs (see the chart below), and to make matters worse, we're buying bigger and bigger television sets than we used to.
TiVo fans know that there are multiple assignable addresses for TiVos to prevent them from interfering with each other in the same room, the Series3 acts exactly the same, although there are some over at TiVoCommunity.com that are complaining about interference from Plasmas and other sources of IR interference.
Dr Eastlund has also been able to draw on subsequent research on turning solids into plasmas. (This method is, in fact, used to apply coatings to the insides of tokamaks.) And the advent of supercomputers able to simulate tokamaks should also speed up the process of building a working prototype.
Kim then shifts into sales-mode by pointing out that Samsung's more power-efficient 240Hz LCDs and Plasmas with highly-reflective black panels and LED edge-lighting are quickly cutting into any advantage offered by OLEDs -- including thinness if you factor in the additional electronics you'd have to slap onto the back of those 3-mm thick OLED panels to create a TV.
