France has a long standing tradition in the field of underwater archaeological research, being one of the pioneering countries to develop scientificmethodology for the discipline of underwater archaeology.
The 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage ensures comprehensive protection of underwater cultural heritage through clear legal and operational rules, in addition to establishing a scientific work methodology in its Annex.
When the council gets a grant application, it is evaluated by five reviewers, on three measures: scientific competence, the proposed methodology and the relevance of the research.
