The Skate Circle, located east of Sheep Meadow and west of the Naumburg Bandshell and the Mall, is a bring-your-own-skates affair.

Continue south down the paths of Central Park, past the sunbather-filled 15 acres of Sheep Meadow, to Columbus Circle, where you can do a bit of window-shopping at the Time Warner Center, which has upscale shops of every stripe as well an enormous Whole Foods Market on the lower level.

But these stores were just an introduction to what had really changed: what had really changed were the subdi-visions beyond the stores, the subdivisions where ten years before there had been only broadleaf tobacco and corn fields, subdivisions with signs at the gated entrances that said MONACO ESTATES and STONEHAVEN, and with streets named Princess Grace Way and Sheep Meadow Circle.
