My first reading ofHeartofDarkness came in the late 1980s, at the time when in Poland much was being said about the atrocities committed in the name of various totalitarian ideologies.
Conversely, a game like Spec Ops: The Line hit me so hard because it was at once a new level of storytelling in video games and a throwback to films like Apocalypse Now and the Joseph Conrad novella, HeartofDarkness.
It was a few years later that I realised the possibility of yet another interpretation of Kurtz's final words: the horror of realising his own miserable inadequacy, thedarkness in his own heart.
