It allows the parties themselves to account for the changes that have taken place over the last 44 years. (Applause.) It allows the parties themselves to take account of those changes, including the new demographic realities on the ground, and the needs of both sides.
"I just don't understand why the first idea put forth is something that might help at the last second, " he said, to massive applause from the audience.
And that's why I went and visited with the House Republican caucus last Friday. (Applause.) We had a good exchange, a good discussion about the challenges facing the American people, our ideas to solve them.
And over 4 million jobs were created in the last two years -- more than 1 million of those in the last six months alone. (Applause.) Now, does this make us satisfied?

Michelle was born and raised here -- a proud daughter of the South Side. (Applause.) Last weekend, she came home, but it was to attend the funeral of Hadiya Pendleton.
And last night we got the traditional applause from the president's supporters at almost everything he said, and we also got this other, sort of, unserious response from the democrats who stood up and applauded when the president said his social security reform plan didn't get passed.
The first message is thank you, because not only did all of you mobilize, organize and energize in 2008 to help send me to the White House -- (applause) -- but over the last two years, so many of you have continued to be involved each and every day to make sure that we could keep moving this country forward.
So how about that opening night last night? (Applause.) Yes, the energy, the enthusiasm that we saw last night -- it really made it clear that folks are pretty fired up and ready to go -- (applause) -- which is a -- it's a very good thing.
So today, America is less dependent on foreign oil than at any time in the last two decades. (Applause.) Think about that.
We've got a long way to go, but we've made progress. (Applause.) Over the last nine months, we have sent more Cabinet members to this region than almost anywhere in the country -- not just to make appearances, but to listen, and to learn, and help you move forward.
Over the last 22 months, our businesses have created more than 3 million jobs. (Applause.) Last year, they created the most jobs since 2005.

The private sector has created jobs for the last eight months in a row. (Applause.) And there are roughly 3 million Americans who are working today because of the economic plan we put into place.
Our businesses have now added more than 5 million new jobs over the last two and a half years. (Applause.) Unemployment has fallen from a peak of 10 percent down to 7.8 percent -- the lowest level since I took office.
