Mr Smith claimed the problems "led towaterdraining out of the reservoirs, as the delay in fixing the leaks stretched out to 30 days, compared with the target of three days".
The solution to those fires (and, indeed, to all peat-related carbon-dioxide emissions) is simple and relatively cheap: stop draining wetlands and allow waterto accumulate in them again.
During the debate it was claimed by Irish socialist MEP Prionsas de Rossa that development by Israeli settlers was aggravating the problem by moving to areas with good water supply, draining other regions.
