Metal on metal hip resurfacing is considered to be a much better option because it has a lower failure rate and is more cost effective since it does not need to be repeated as often as a totalhipreplacement.
The company believed the product was performing well until August 2010 when it "received new information from the National Joint Registry of England and Wales reporting that 12% of ASR resurfacing patients and 13% of ASR TotalHipReplacement patients were undergoing second hipreplacement surgery sooner than expected".
