Mason, from the Erdington area, was arrested after confessing he had killed his "girlfriend" to officers in Birmingham city centre, West Midlands Police said.
The project has been funded by the Homes and Communities Agency, Birmingham City Council, Advantage West Midlands and Homeless Link.
National Express West Midlands said 50% of its buses call at city centre stops instead following a passenger survey.
In June, West Midlands Police dug up land near Purcell Road in the city but did not find any remains.
West Midlands Police said extra police patrols would be out in the city centre over the weekend to reassure members of the public.

West Midlands Police said she was found by council street wardens in the city following an intensive search.
So, for instance, crime has dropped by 14% in the Thames Valley, by 12% in the City of London and by 10% in the West Midlands.
The hoard is owned by Birmingham City Council and Stoke-on-Trent City Council, following a fundraising campaign to keep it in the West Midlands.
