The forestry industry, which accounts for around 8% of exports and is centred in the worst-hit regions, may be shut down for at least a month because of damage to factories and to transport links, says Charles Kimber of Arauco, a big forestry firm.

In one of the worst hit regions, Indonesia's Banda Aceh still bears scars from the wave -- you see it in the twisted metal, in the gutted buildings and the naked foundations where homes once stood.

Of the four global regions inhabited by primates, the worst hit is Madagascar, where loss of habitat to traditional slash-and-burn agriculture has left some lemur species, such as Perrier's sifaka, stranded in tiny areas of forest.
