听觉器官在声波的作用下产生的对声音特性的感觉。其适宜刺激物是声波。声波是由物体的振动所激起的空气的周期性压缩和稀疏。听觉器官是耳。耳分为外耳、中耳和内耳三部分。听感受器是内耳蜗管里基底膜上由听觉细胞组成的科蒂氏器官。物体发出的声音通过空气的传播，经外耳、中耳和内耳的传导系统，引起耳蜗内淋巴液和基底膜纤维的振动，并由此激起听觉细胞的兴奋，产生神经冲动。冲动沿着听觉神经传到丘脑后内侧膝状体，交换神经元后进入大脑皮层听区(颞上回)，产生听觉。声波有频率、振幅和波形的特性，由此决定听觉的音高(音调)、音响(音强)和音色(音质)三种不同的效应。人类听觉的一个重要特点，是听感觉阈限有一个很宽的动态范围。就声波的振动频率这个参数而言，人能听到的纯音为16赫到2万赫之间。对声波振幅(音强)的感觉，最低可为0分贝，最高可达到120分贝。听觉阈限的个体差异较大，受年龄、环境等多种因素的影响。音乐听觉比较灵敏的人，能在钢琴的两个相邻键之间分辨出20～30个中间音来。人和动物根据物体的声音及其变化，可以辨别发声物体的性质及其方向和距离等。
