耗氧量为每升水中在一定条件下被氧化剂氧化时消耗的氧化剂量，折算为氧的毫克数表示还原性物质。化学耗氧量的测定，根据所用氧化剂的不同，分为高锰酸钾法、重铬酸钾法和碘酸钾法。由于高锰酸钾法操作简单、快速，常用于清洁的天然水，水厂出厂水及养殖水域水质的分析，而污染水域水质的耗氧量测定，因高锰酸钾法很难氧化成份复杂的污染物，故常用重铬酸钾法。
