小说的一种形式。其容量大小、篇幅长短、人物多寡、情节繁简等均介于长篇小说和短篇小说之间，通常只是截取主人公某个时期或某一段生活的典型事件塑造形象。反映社会生活的某个方面，故事情节完整。线索比较单一，矛盾斗争不如长篇小说复杂，人物较少。一般在三万到十万字左右。如《边城》、《羊脂球》、《第六病室》、《变形记》等。字数的多少，是区别长篇、中篇、短篇小说的一个因素之一，不是唯 一的因素。
