光谱项是粒子的一个能态。标记该能态的量子数称为光谱项符号。它是描写多电子原子与分子的量子能态的符号。一般用大写字母S、P、D、F等表示多电子原子的角量子数，L=0，1，2，3等状态。再在左上标表示自旋多重性2S+1，借以表示不同的轨道或能阶。当在右下标表示总角动量量子数J具体数值；这种符号称为“光谱支项”，每个光谱项包含2s+1个光谱支项。
