堇菜科是被子植物门双子叶植物纲五桠果亚纲金虎尾目中的一科。草本、灌木，稀乔木。约22属900种，广泛分布于全世界，但主要分布在温带、亚热带与热带高海拔山区。 叶多基生或互生，托叶形态多变化。花单生或总状花序，辐射对称或两侧对称，萼片与花瓣均5数，下方一花瓣常延伸成距；雄蕊5，子房上位，通常由3心皮合成，具1至数颗倒生胚珠。果实为开裂的蒴果或浆果状。
