堇青石是一种硅酸盐矿物，它可呈无色，但通常具有浅蓝或浅紫色，玻璃光泽。堇青石还具有一个特点，它们会在不同的方向上发出不同颜色的光线，这叫多色性。品优色美的堇青石被当作宝石，除此以外，堇青石没有什么工业上的用途。堇青石产于片岩、片麻岩及蚀变火成岩中。人们因此也称堇青石为二色石。人工可以合成镁堇青石，用于耐火材料。堇青石原石一般重4-5克拉，更大的也有发现。堇青石一般切割成传统的形状，最受欢迎的颜色是蓝紫色。
