次原子粒子又称亚原子粒子，指结构比原子更小的粒子。所有原子都是由更小的“次原子”粒子所组成,包括电子、质子与中子。总的来说，次原子粒子可能是电子、中子、质子、介子、夸克、胶子、光子等等。
这些天文学家认为这些奇怪的辐射可能是某种怪异的次原子粒子（subatomic particle）造成的。科学家过去就曾预测过这种所谓的惰性微中子（sterile neutrino），但从未侦测到过。
