河蚬贝壳中等大小，呈圆底三角形，壳高与壳长近似，两壳膨胀，壳顶高，稍偏向前方。壳面有光泽，颜色因环境而异，常呈棕黄色、黄绿色或黑褐色。壳面有粗糙的环肋。韧带短，突出于壳外。绞合部发达，闭壳肌痕明显，外套痕深而显著。河蚬栖息于淡水的湖泊、沟渠、池塘及咸淡水交汇的江河中，广泛分布于我国内陆水域。在俄罗斯、日本、朝鲜、东南亚各国均有分布。
