设△S为ABCD平面上的任一面积，用△P表示作用在面积△S的总作用力，比值△P/△S的极限称为流体静压强。因此，流体单位面积所受到垂直于该表面上的力称为流体的静压强。习惯上，把流体静压强称为静压力，或称压力，而将某一面积上所受到的静压力称为总作用力。
前者没有流动，压力是流体静压力（hydrostatic pressure）；后者流动了，讨论的是应力（stress）。在静止的时候，非牛顿流体跟牛顿和inviscid fulid是一模一样的。
