硬质泡沫塑料是指无柔韧性，压缩硬度大，应力达到一定值能产生形变，解除应力后不能恢复原状的泡沫塑料。ISO还规定将其压缩至50%再解除压力后厚度减少10%以上的泡沫塑料为硬泡沫塑料。常利用其隔热性和力学特性用于有关方面。代表性的产品是聚苯乙烯泡沫塑料、硬质聚氨酯泡沫塑料，还有酚醛、氨基、环氧、热固性丙烯酸酯树脂等泡沫塑料，以及硬质聚氯乙烯泡沫塑料。可用作隔热材料、夹层材料、包装材料、隔音和防震材料、建筑材料等。
