系杆拱桥作为拱桥家族中的一员，具有拱桥的一般特征，又有自身的独有特点。它是一种集拱与梁的优点于一身的桥型，它将拱与梁两种基本结构形式组合在一起，共同承受荷载，充分发挥梁受弯、拱受压的结构性能和组合作用，拱端的水平推力用拉杆承受，使拱端支座不产生水平推力。拱与弦间用两端铰接的竖直杆联结而成。亦可用斜杆来代替直杆成为尼尔森体系。这种拱桥内部为超静定体系，外部则为静定，因此对墩台不均匀沉降无影响。从结构上主要可以分为有推力和无推力两种组合体系。
