天花是遮蔽建筑内顶部的构件，而建筑内呈穹窿状的天花则称作“藻井”，这种天花的每一方格为一井，又是以花纹，雕刻，彩画，故名藻井。“藻井”一词，最早见于汉赋。清代时的藻井较多以龙为顶心装饰，所以藻井又称为“龙井”。此外，在沈括的《梦溪笔谈·器用》中还记载有藻井的一些别名：“……古人谓之绮井，亦曰藻井，又谓之覆海。”
