AcadiaNationalPark on Mount Desert Island in Maine is one of the most successful pieces of social and physical engineering in the United States, and it is and has always been a joint public-private effort.
The Cabot Trail, named for John Cabot, the Italian explorer who discovered the island in 1497, winds around the dramatic coast and offers access to Cape Breton Highlands NationalPark, a more remote version of Maine's Acadia.
