By the same token, Europeans and Americans for centuries have approached Africa with stereotyped expectations--dark continent, jungle, lions and crocodiles, savage tribes and lately, grinding poverty, racism, and a land ravaged by AIDs--only to find those stereotypes both true and utterly wrong.
