Materials added to cement to change the properties of the cement. Types of cement additives are accelerators, retarders, extenders, weighting agents, dispersants, fluid-loss control agents, lost circulation control agents, and antifoam agents. Cement additives are used to change the cement's density, setting time, compressive strength, flow properties and dehydration rate, to cause the cement to expand, and to reduce the cost of the cement. Calcium chloride is added to reduce setting time, gypsum to increase setting time, barite and hematite to increase density, and bentonite and pozzolans to decrease density.
