Last month, Chad Mirkin 's Northwestern spinoff Nanosphere entered into a development contract with the U.S. Government Technical Support Working Group to use Nanosphere's proprietary biomolecular detection system (using gold nanoparticles) for detection of biologicalwarfareagents like anthrax.
The relative difficulties of using agents of biologicalwarfare effectively and the ease and effectiveness of alternatives (especially plain, old-fashioned explosives) argue against a massive expenditure of resources to counter bioterrorism.
