abstract:Bloody Sunday is a name given to political clashes that occurred in Colmar, Alsace, France on August 22, 1926. On that day the French Communist Party and the Colmar section of the Popular Republican Union (a Catholic organization) had organized a joint protest meeting at the Salle des Catherinettes.
The event commemorates the "Bloody Sunday" beating of voting rights marchers including a young Lewis by state troopers as they began a march to Montgomery in March 1965.
In response to BloodySunday, Dr. King put the word out asking supporters from around the nation to travel to Selma to participate in another march to take place two days later, a march intended to go from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.
