This banknote liability arises largely because the bulk of the euro currency circulating outside the eurozone is sourced from, and paid for in, Germany, meaning that the Bundesbank holds a much greater share of refinancing loan assets backing the eurobanknote circulation than its statutory allocation.
The painting by Eugene Delacroix, which featured on the pre-euro, 100-franc French banknote and reportedly inspired the Statue of Liberty in New York, is being exhibited in Lens for a year.
