abstract:The term Greater Serbia or Great Serbia (, Velika Srbija) applies to the Serbian nationalist and irredentist ideology directed towards the creation of a Serbian land which would incorporate all regions of traditional significance to the Serbian nation, and regions outside of Serbia that are populated mostly by Serbs. This movement's main ideology is to unite all Serbs (or all historically ruled or Serb populated lands) into one state, claiming, depending on the version, different areas of many surrounding countries.
But his attempt to dominated the whole of the former Yugoslavia failed - as did his subsequent enterprise in the early 1990s to carve out a greaterSerbia with the capture of Serb-populated areas of Croatia and Bosnia.
In short, Milosevic has reason to believe that -- by obscuring the continuing, direct relationship between Serb policy and the Bosnian Serbs' malevolent activities -- further progress can be made toward his goal of establishing a "greater Serbia" even as he seeks relief from international sanctions against Belgrade and protection of Serbia proper from Western military strikes, should they occur.
