abstract:Green leaf volatiles (commonly abbreviated as GLV) is a volatile organic compound term to describe the variety of chemicals that are released when plants suffer tissue damage. Some of these chemicals act as signalling compounds between either plants of the same species, of other species or even vastly different lifeforms like insects.
There are manydifferenttypesofvolatilecompounds with exotic names such as isoprenes, monoterpenes, green leaf volatiles, herbivore-induced volatiles, and others.
Invisible and, often odorless, greenleafvolatiles emitted from vegetation act as a defense mechanism, communicating to other foliage that danger is near.
