I lifted the sleeping Rayne, and left the fort. I carried her bridal style to the totaled car. I got all of our stuff, including stuff out of the spring fort. I slung all the duffels on my shoulder and used the shoe string from the spring fort to tie Rayne's suitcase to my pants, so I was dragging it behind me. I carried all the stuff and Rayne to the road, past my totaled car, tears rolling down my cheeks. I walked on the road, through the snow. I walked for miles and miles and miles. I still hadn't found the highway, but I was on a back road after eight hours of straight walking. It was getting dark. I kept walking.
