Israel didn't yet exist, six million European Jews hadn't yet ceased to exist, and the local relevance of distant Palestine (under British mandate since the 1918 dissolution by the victorious Allies ofthe last far-flung provincesofthe defunct OttomanEmpire) was a mystery to me.
When the area was part oftheOttomanEmpire prior to World War One, it was three separate provinces centered on Baghdad, Basra and Mosul, in recognition of its ethnic diversity.
