The Big Sea Survey was launched in 2010 by Newcastle University to record flora and fauna along a 150-mile stretch of coastline from St Abbs to Saltburn.
Tricky and ever-changing conditions keep the course fraught with danger, and during the 5, 000-mile competition, an Italian racer on a competing boat fell overboard and was lost at sea.
