地形，是指地表各种各样的形态，具体指地表以上分布的固定物体所共同呈现出的高低起伏的各种状态。地形与地势、地貌不完全一样。 五种突出地形是平原、高原、丘陵、盆地、山地，除高原之外都有不同级别。这些地形有一级类型与二级类型之别。它们在相邻的同级形态上是彼此不同的，相邻的含义本身就排斥包容，例如四川盆地相邻的四周是平原和山脉。一个大地形由不同的下级地形组成，是包容关系，例如四川盆地里面有成都平原和峨眉山及一些丘陵等，松辽盆地有松嫩平原和丘陵等，青藏高原里面又有五种二级地形如柴达木盆地、冈底斯山脉等，天山山脉是山地而东部有吐鲁番盆地和丘陵。 能源时代的地质学重视盆地研究。1901年里海盆地石油占当时全球原油产量的50%，后来波斯湾盆地石油称霸。中国大庆油田在松辽盆地。农业种植重视华北平原和东北平原的功能，工业开采则重视松辽盆地、渤海—华北盆地的研究。
